Sports licensing is evolving beyond traditional supporter merchandise. From lifestyle products and co-branding to culturally relevant collaborations, sporting properties are finding new ways to reach broader audiences, strengthen fan connections and build long-term brand value.

One of the biggest shifts in sports licensing over the last five years is that merchandise can no longer be treated simply as an extension of supporter wear. Licensing has evolved into a much broader brand-building opportunity.

Fans still want jerseys, caps and traditional supporter products, but today they also want products that allow them to interact with a sporting property across different parts of their lives – through fashion, food, beauty, accessories, collectibles, kids’ products, gifting and lifestyle categories.

This creates an opportunity for rights holders to reach consumers well beyond the traditional match-day supporter.

THE RISE OF CO-BRANDING

This is where co-branding becomes particularly powerful.

A successful collaboration cannot simply be two recognisable logos placed next to each other. There needs to be a reason for the brands to come together. The product needs to make sense, the audiences need to have some form of connection and, importantly, the collaboration needs to create something that neither brand could necessarily have achieved on its own.

REACHING NEW AUDIENCES THROUGH COLLABORATION

The Springboks x Hello Kitty collaboration is a good example.

Sports and character collaborations are certainly not new internationally, but this particular partnership has cultural relevance in the South African market because of the audience it speaks to.

Historically, much of rugby merchandise has understandably been designed around the traditional rugby supporter. However, the female supporter base has grown significantly, and so has the opportunity to develop products specifically with women and girls in mind.

It is important not to simply take a traditional supporter product, make it smaller or change the colour and call it a women’s range. The opportunity lies in understanding what different consumers genuinely want to buy.

Hello Kitty introduces the Springboks brand into a very different design language, creating something playful, fashionable and collectible while still retaining the strength and identity of the Springboks.

It also speaks to the people who often influence purchasing decisions within households. Women are purchasing for themselves, but they are also frequently purchasing for partners, children and families. Developing products that resonate with them therefore has an impact far beyond one demographic.

BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SUPPORTERS

Licensing also provides an opportunity to cultivate the next generation of supporters.

A young girl may not initially connect with rugby through an 80-minute match. She may, however, connect with a Springboks x Hello Kitty T-shirt, accessory or product that relates to something she already loves.

That product becomes an introduction to the Springboks brand. Over time, that connection can develop into fandom.

RELEVANCE OVER REACH

That is why relevance is so important.

A strong licensing programme should ideally offer points of entry across different ages, interests and price points. Someone buying a small licensed grocery item and someone purchasing a premium apparel collaboration are participating in the same brand ecosystem, just in different ways.

This is increasingly evident within the Springboks licensing programme at Signet Licensing. The opportunity is no longer only about putting licensed merchandise into sports retailers. It is about identifying where consumers already shop and finding relevant ways for the Springboks brand to meet them there.

That could be through fashion, FMCG, cosmetics, collectibles or collaborations with iconic South African brands.

The strongest products generally share the same fundamentals: good design, appropriate quality, the right price point, credible distribution and a compelling reason to exist. The official licence or logo alone is not enough to guarantee consumer demand.

THE POWER OF TIMING AND EXCLUSIVITY

Exclusivity and timing can amplify that demand.

Sport creates moments that very few other industries can replicate. Tours, major matches, rivalries, anniversaries and historic achievements create emotional peaks.

Licensing teams need to be close enough to the broader commercial and marketing strategy to anticipate those opportunities rather than reacting to them afterwards.

For that reason, licensing and merchandising should form part of the commercial conversation from the outset, alongside sponsorship, marketing, retail and fan engagement.

PUTTING THE BRAND ON THE RIGHT THINGS

One of the biggest mistakes is treating licensing as an afterthought or assuming that more product automatically means more revenue. Over-licensing, inappropriate brand partnerships, weak design, incorrect pricing or poor distribution can dilute a brand very quickly.

The objective should not be to put the logo on everything. It should be to put the brand on the right things.

CREATING A DISTINCTLY SOUTH AFRICAN IDENTITY

There is also enormous opportunity for South African sports properties to develop a stronger local identity through merchandise.

South Africa has extraordinary design, culture, humour, heritage and creativity. The most exciting future collaborations will be those that feel unmistakably relevant to South African consumers rather than simply following international licensing trends.

Social media and e-commerce are accelerating this shift because consumers now discover products differently. A collaboration can move from launch to conversation to purchase almost instantly.

Visually strong, unexpected products are particularly powerful because they generate engagement beyond traditional advertising.

THE FUTURE OF SPORTS LICENSING

Sports licensing is expected to become significantly more lifestyle-driven, more collaborative and more audience-specific.

Sporting properties will increasingly appear in categories that historically would never have been considered “sports merchandise”. There will be more limited editions, more culturally relevant collaborations, stronger female and youth-focused ranges, and greater emphasis on design and storytelling.

BEYOND THE REVENUE STREAM

Ultimately, Licensing is not only a revenue stream.

Done properly, it extends the reach of a sporting property, creates new ways for consumers to participate in the brand and builds connections with people who may never have considered themselves traditional sports fans.

That is where the real long-term value lies.

Rugby sponsorship in South Africa is evolving beyond logos and exposure. Brad Guymer, GM Rugby at Megapro, explores how brands can unlock greater value through integrated commercial partnerships, deeper fan engagement, data-driven insights and meaningful participation in rugby culture.

THE CHANGING FACE OF RUGBY SPONSORSHIP IN SOUTH AFRICA

For decades, rugby has offered brands in South Africa something very few platforms can, a deeply engaged audience, a powerful emotional connection and the opportunity to be part of moments that matter to millions of people.

That remains as true as ever. What has changed profoundly is how brands turn that connection into commercial value, and how sports marketing and sponsorship are being used to achieve broader business objectives.

The timing is significant and in an economy where marketing budgets are under pressure, brands are investing more in rugby, not less. That signals something bigger about how the sponsorship landscape is evolving.

FROM EXPOSURE TO ENGAGEMENT

Traditionally, sponsorship success was largely measured through exposure – how many people watched, how often the brand was visible and what the equivalent media value was.

Those metrics still matter, but brands increasingly want to understand what happened as a result of that exposure. Did consumers engage? Did perceptions shift? Did it generate leads, drive sales, build loyalty or create valuable first-party data?

This is moving the industry away from simply selling sponsorship inventory towards building commercial partnerships around specific business objectives.

The starting point can no longer be “what assets do we have available?” It needs to be “what is the brand trying to achieve, and how can rugby help achieve it?”

Two brands sponsoring the same property may have completely different objectives. One may want national awareness, another customer acquisition, while another is focused on hospitality, content or community impact. The strongest partnerships are designed around those objectives rather than a standard package of rights.

WHY THE SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET IS CHANGING

Marketing budgets are under pressure and sponsorship competes with an ever growing number of channels for investment. Digital platforms allow brands to target consumers with extraordinary precision and measure results almost immediately.

Sponsorship therefore cannot sit in isolation from the rest of the marketing mix. Decision-makers need to demonstrate how it contributes to wider business goals.

Competition for sponsorship spend is also fierce. Rugby competes not only with other sporting codes, but with entertainment, music, creators and countless other platforms competing for consumer attention.

Yet SA Rugby’s sponsorship growth shows that when the proposition is right, brands will commit. There is an important lesson here – value multiplies when a partnership is built around the whole rather than sliced into individual assets.

Major events such as the Nations Championship and Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry reinforce this broader value proposition. Their impact extends well beyond the field, driving activity across tourism, hospitality, accommodation, transport and the wider events economy. For brands, this creates opportunities to engage consumers across multiple touchpoints and demonstrates why major rugby properties can deliver value far beyond traditional sponsorship exposure.

THE RUGBY FAN HAS CHANGED TOO

The 80 minutes on the field remain at the heart of rugby, but the fan experience now stretches far beyond kick-off and the final whistle. A supporter might watch the match on television while following commentary on social media, sharing clips, consuming player content and engaging with brands both at the stadium and online.

For sponsors, this creates a much broader canvas. Brands can engage supporters before, during and after through content, digital platforms, hospitality, competitions, experiences, retail and on-the-ground activation.

Buying the rights is only one part of the investment. Bringing those rights to life is where the real value is created.

The question should be – what does Monday to match day look like?

BECOMING PART OF RUGBY CULTURE

South African rugby fans are passionate, knowledgeable and emotionally invested. They also recognise when a brand is simply placing its logo onto something they love.

The brands that resonate are those that find a credible role in the supporter experience: creating memorable experiences, producing content people genuinely want, supporting the development of the game or understanding the humour, traditions and culture surrounding rugby.

The goal is to move from being a sponsor of rugby to becoming a participant in rugby culture.

Data and measurement will only grow in importance

Historically, sponsorship relied heavily on audience size and media exposure. Digital engagement and data now allow us to go much deeper.

Who are the supporters? What are they watching, buying and attending? How are they interacting with sponsors?

The better rights holders and brands can answer these questions, the more sophisticated and defensible sponsorship becomes. For rights holders, investing in audience understanding is no longer optional. For brands, connecting sponsorship to wider customer data is increasingly how genuine return on investment will be demonstrated.

NEW AUDIENCES, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

There is also an opportunity to rethink what constitutes a valuable rugby property.

Women’s rugby is perhaps the clearest example. The 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup final drew 81,885 fans to Twickenham and a peak UK audience of 5.8 million, becoming the most-watched women’s rugby match ever on British television.

Women’s rugby is no longer a niche proposition. It represents one of the most exciting commercial growth opportunities in world sport, and South Africa has a genuine part to play.

Grassroots and community rugby offer brands a different, more human connection. Players are also becoming media platforms in their own right, while the personalities and stories surrounding the game create opportunities for brands to build content platforms rather than simply borrow airtime.

RIGHTS HOLDERS HAVE TO EVOLVE TOO

Changing brand expectations also place responsibility on those of us on the supply side.

Traditional sponsorship models were built around fixed inventories such as logos, tickets, hospitality, signage and naming rights. Those assets remain valuable, but brands increasingly want partnerships designed around their objectives, audiences and definitions of success.

At Megapro, as a sports marketing agency in South Africa, this is exactly the shift we’re leaning into. Effective rights management is becoming less about simply packaging and selling assets and more about creating partnerships that deliver measurable value for both brands and rights holders.

The best partnerships are collaborative, and they continue to evolve.

WHAT RUGBY STILL DOES THAT VERY FEW PLATFORMS CAN

For all the changes in media, technology and consumer behaviour, the fundamental strength of rugby sponsorship in South Africa remains remarkably constant – emotion.

A Test match can dominate conversation across the country, as we witnessed during Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry. Supporters plan their weekends around fixtures, travel to stadiums and experience the highs and lows together.

Very few marketing platforms can create that level of genuine emotional investment. For brands, the opportunity isn’t simply to be visible in those moments. It’s to add something meaningful to them.

THE NEXT ERA

Over the next three to five years, I believe the lines between sponsorship, content, experience, digital and customer engagement will blur almost completely.

Successful rugby partnerships will be integrated, measurable and tailored to specific objectives. Exposure, branding and hospitality will still matter, but none should be viewed in isolation. The real value lies in connecting them.

So, the question for a brand considering rugby should no longer simply be:

“How much exposure will we get?”

A better question is:

“What role can our brand play in the experience of the South African rugby fan?”

For those of us on the rights-holder and agency side, our job is to help brands answer that question. And for an industry fortunate enough to work within a sport that means so much to South Africans, that’s an exciting place to be.

Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has unveiled a new identity for Newlands Cape Town, celebrating the venue’s rich heritage while positioning it as a world-class destination for sport, entertainment, hospitality, business and lifestyle experiences.

An iconic cricket ground and an extraordinary stage to elevate any occasion.

NEWLANDS – Few sporting venues in the world are defined as much by their setting as Newlands. Framed by Table Mountain, shaded by its famous oak trees and shaped by more than 135 years of unforgettable moments, Newlands has earned its place among the world’s most iconic sporting venues.

Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) today unveiled the new identity for Newlands Cape Town, celebrating everything that has made the venue special while positioning it as a world-class destination for sport, entertainment, hospitality, business and lifestyle experiences.

For generations, Newlands has been synonymous with world-class cricket and the stage for some of the most unforgettable cricketing moments, but its story extends far beyond the boundary rope. It is a place where communities gather, businesses connect, celebrations unfold and visitors from around the world experience one of Cape Town’s defining landmarks.

The new identity reflects the broader role of the venue, strengthening Newlands as a world-class destination while remaining true to the heritage, character and sense of place that have made it one of South Africa’s most treasured sporting venues.

The announcement follows the recent launch of the Western Province Cobras brand, with both initiatives reflecting renewed energy, investment and commercial ambition within Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) as it continues strengthening two of South Africa’s most iconic brands. The continued efforts behind the scenes and front of house have led to YesPlay signing as the stadium title sponsor for the next four years, as well as title sponsor of the WP Cobras, expertly brokered by Megapro.

YesPlay, as well as their YesCares social outreach initiative, are going to bring new energy to Newlands. The stadium will now be formally referred to as YesPlay Newlands.

More than a cricket ground

Every summer, Newlands welcomes the WP Cobras, The Proteas and MI Cape Town, and is a bucket-list experience for both local and global fans alike. But Newlands has always been capable of more. Over the years it has welcomed international music legends, conferences, weddings, corporate events and community celebrations, proving that its unique setting elevates every experience it hosts.

The new identity embraces that broader opportunity, positioning Newlands as a venue where world-class occasions, whatever their nature, become even more memorable. Because when the setting is as extraordinary as Newlands, every occasion is elevated. This is summed up in the campaign line: ‘Majestic Happens Here.’

A logo inspired by place

The new identity draws inspiration not from the stadium itself, but from the timeless qualities that have made Newlands globally recognisable. The logo elegantly combines the silhouette of Table Mountain with the form of an oak leaf, paying tribute to the famous oaks that have become synonymous with the ground while celebrating the natural beauty that defines the Newlands experience.

Rather than relying on traditional sporting imagery, the identity was intentionally designed to feel timeless and sophisticated; equally at home on premium merchandise, hospitality experiences, venue signage or alongside the world’s leading brands. It reflects the premium character of Newlands without ever losing the warmth, character and accessibility that have made it such a beloved part of Cape Town.

The refined colour palette draws on the familiar greens of Newlands, the heritage colours of Western Province Cricket and the understated elegance associated with world-class hospitality, creating an identity that feels unmistakably Newlands.

Investing in the experience

The new identity is accompanied by continued investment in the venue itself. Recent improvements include upgraded hospitality suites with motorised retractable awnings, new lift infrastructure and enhanced seating with extra wheelchair seating. A new secondary scoreboard will be installed, complemented by upgrades to the sound and EVAC system, and the refurbishment of food and beverage kiosks to further enhance the fan experience. Player and match officials have not been forgotten, with further improvements planned as Newlands continues its evolution. These include upgrades to player and umpire changing rooms, an improved scorers’ enclosure and enhanced net practice facilities. Finally, the President and Oaks Pavilions have received a fresh coat of paint.

These investments reinforce WPCA’s commitment to ensuring that one of the world’s most iconic cricket grounds continues to deliver an experience worthy of its reputation. Supporters will experience these improvements during an exciting international season that includes tours by Australia, Bangladesh, India (Women) and England as well as in the SA20 and an improved domestic cricket offering.

Corrie van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer, Western Province Cricket Association

“Newlands is one of the world’s great sporting venues, and we believe its future is every bit as exciting as its past,” said van Zyl.

“Our ambition is to strengthen Newlands as a year-round destination while continuing to celebrate the cricket that has made it famous. At the same time, we’re investing in the venue itself to ensure the experience continues to match its global reputation. We would also like to thank Civils 2000 and Much Asphalt for their support in making this brand-building project possible. We also welcome YesPlay to the team and their YesCares social outreach initiative. This is an exciting time to be part of our set-up!”

Johannes Adams, President, Western Province Cricket Association

“Newlands has always been much more than a stadium. It is part of the identity of Cape Town and a place where generations have gathered to celebrate unforgettable moments,” said Adams.

“This new identity celebrates everything people already love about Newlands while creating an exciting platform for its continued growth and commercial success.”

Tebogo Makamo, Chief Executive Officer of YesPlay

“Newlands stadium is one of those rare places where the setting, the history and the experience come together to create something truly special. For YesPlay, being part of its next chapter is an incredible opportunity and one we take very seriously. We’re proud to become the title sponsor of YesPlay Newlands Cape Town and to play a role in the continued progression of this iconic venue. This is about more than putting our name on a stadium. It is about helping create new experiences, new memories and new reasons for people to connect with a place that already means so much to so many. We believe the best partnerships become part of the story they are helping to build, and we’re excited to be part of the next chapter of Newlands.”

Michael Cook, Co-founder, Workbench

“It was a privilege to work on a brand with such remarkable heritage. We wanted to create something timeless, beautiful and iconic that reflected the natural setting and unique character of Newlands, while creating an identity sophisticated enough to stand alongside the world’s great destination brands, yet warm and approachable enough to be true to the heart of Newlands.”

Home of the Newlands faithful

For generations, Newlands belonged to its people. It is home to the Newlands Faithful, who return year after year to support the WP Cobras, The Proteas and MI Cape Town, while welcoming visitors from around the world to experience one of cricket’s most iconic settings. That connection between place and people remains at the heart of the Newlands story and always will.

Building iconic brands

The Newlands Cape Town identity will be introduced progressively across the venue over the coming months.

Together, the launches of Newlands Cape Town and Western Province Cobras represent more than new identities. They signal a renewed ambition for Western Province Cricket Association to invest in two of South African sport’s most recognisable brands, strengthen their commercial appeal and ensure they continue inspiring supporters, partners and visitors for generations to come.

One is the home. The other is the team. Together, they tell the next chapter of Western Province cricket.

Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has launched the Western Province Cobras, bringing together the proud legacies of Western Province and the Cape Cobras under a new professional identity that unites the province’s men’s and women’s teams.

A proud new chapter built on two great cricketing legacies and supported by a new title sponsor.

NEWLANDS – For generations, Western Province and the Cape Cobras have each played a defining role in South African cricket.

Today, Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) officially brings those two stories together with the launch of the Western Province Cobras, a new professional identity that honours the history of both brands while creating a platform for the future.

The Western Province Cobras will unite the province’s men’s and women’s professional teams under a single identity built on excellence, ambition and a deep connection to the Cape Metropole cricket community.

Rather than choosing one legacy over another, Western Province Cricket has chosen to build on the strengths of both, ensuring that the history of Western Province and the achievements of the Cape Cobras remain central to the next chapter of professional cricket.

Faithful and forward

The Western Province Cobras identity has been built around a simple belief: great brands don’t leave their history behind, they build upon it.

Western Province remains one of the most celebrated names in South African cricket, while the Cape Cobras represented one of the most successful periods in the region’s professional history, winning multiple domestic titles during the franchise era and the hearts of local fans, the Newlands Faithful. Rather than choosing one legacy over another, the new identity brings both together.

The official team name will be Western Province Cobras, while WP Cobras becomes the team’s distinctive public-facing identity across supporter communications, merchandise and apparel. WP Cobras will also serve as the team’s primary marketing and commercial brand, creating a clear and consistent identity for supporters and partners alike.

The move also brings Western Province’s professional identity in line with South Africa’s leading domestic teams, creating a clear, distinctive brand that proudly competes alongside the likes of the Lions, Titans, Dolphins, Warriors, Knights and North West Dragons.

This brand development also coincides with the exciting announcement that YesPlay will be the new team and stadium title sponsor for the next four years. In formal press, broadcast and brand communication the team will be referred to as YesPlay WP Cobras. To this end, the team have developed a WP monogram that will remain a permanent feature of the brand, ensuring Western Province’s heritage is always represented and remains an enduring symbol of the province’s proud cricketing history.

A considered process

The new identity follows an extensive consultation process involving stakeholders from across Western Province cricket, including current players, former players, coaches, supporters, administrators, commercial partners and the media.

The consultation reaffirmed two important truths: that the Western Province name carries enormous emotional value and remains central to the region’s identity, and that the Cape Cobras established a successful and respected professional era that deserved to remain part of the story.

The visual identity reflects that thinking. While introducing a contemporary expression for the future, the logo intentionally retains the recognisable typography associated with the Cobras, with the forward-pointing “fang” giving the brand mark a modern edge and reflecting the team’s ambition to push the game and the province forward.

Corrie van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer, Western Province Cricket Association

“Western Province Cobras represents the best of where we’ve come from and where we’re going. We weren’t looking to choose between Western Province and the Cobras, we wanted to bring together the best of both traditions and create a platform for future success. We would also like to thank Civils 2000 and Much Asphalt for their support in making this brand-building project possible. We also welcome YesPlay to the team and their YesCares social outreach initiative through a four-year partnership expertly brokered by MegaPro. This is an exciting time to be part of our team!”

“This is an important moment for Western Province Cricket. It respects our heritage while creating a modern platform that will inspire players, supporters and commercial partners for generations to come. ‘Faithful and Forward’ perfectly captures what this brand stands for: remaining proud custodians of our history while continuing to build a stronger future for cricket in the Cape Metro area.”

Ashwell Prince, Western Province and Cobras legend

“Western Province has always meant something special to generations of players. I like that this identity doesn’t forget the past. It respects the Western Province legacy, acknowledges everything the Cobras achieved during the professional era and creates something future generations will be proud to represent.”

Faye Tunnicliffe, WP Cobras Women’s batter

“Bringing our men’s and women’s teams together under one professional identity is an important step for the future of cricket in our province. It’s a brand built on heritage, but it’s also looking forward. As players, we’re proud to represent both where Western Province cricket has come from and the exciting future it is building.”

Tebogo Makamo, Chief Executive Officer of YesPlay

“Being part of this pivotal moment in the evolution of Western Province Cricket is something we’re incredibly proud of. The launch of the Western Province Cobras brings together two proud cricketing legacies, creating a bold new identity that honours the past while looking firmly to the future. For YesPlay, this partnership is an opportunity to support that ambition and help create a brand that is relevant, connected to its supporters and built for the next generation, while preserving the heritage that makes Western Province cricket so special. We’re excited to stand alongside the Western Province Cobras and create meaningful experiences for players and supporters as well as the broader cricket community with our YesCares CSI initiatives.”

Looking ahead

The YesPlay WP Cobras identity and communication will be introduced as part of the 2026/27 domestic season.

The YesPlay WP Cobras brand has been purposefully designed to provide a strong and enduring platform for future commercial partnerships while ensuring that the heritage of Western Province cricket remains permanently visible at its heart.

The launch marks the beginning of a new chapter for professional cricket in the Cape Metropole, one that honours the province’s rich history while creating opportunities for future generations of players, supporters and commercial partners.

The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) is preparing for one of the most exciting international cricket seasons in recent memory, following confirmation of all home international fixtures for the 2026/27 season.

The upcoming summer promises world-class cricket, packed stadiums and significant commercial opportunities for partners looking to align with one of South Africa’s premier sporting venues.

The iconic New Year’s Test match returns to its rightful home in Cape Town, reinforcing the city’s status as one of the most celebrated cricket destinations in the world.

The 2026/27 international programme will see Cape Town host two major Test matches against fierce rivals Australia and England, along with a One Day International against Bangladesh. With global audiences expected to tune in and thousands of fans travelling to the city, the season is set to deliver exceptional exposure for brands associated with Western Province Cricket.

In anticipation of this landmark season, WPCA has partnered with Megapro to conduct an independent valuation of its commercial assets, examining opportunities across stadium naming rights, team naming rights, and other key sponsorship properties. The outcomes of this completed stadium naming rights valuation now provide a structured, data-driven platform to go to market and comes ahead of the upcoming conclusion of the current stadium naming rights agreement with World Sports Betting.

WPCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Corrie van Zyl, said the partnership represents an important step in strengthening the organisation’s commercial capability.

“Partnering with Megapro is a strategic move to unlock the full commercial potential of our assets. Their expertise and proven track record will help us deliver world-class sponsorship solutions that benefit our stakeholders and elevate the Western Cape as a global sports destination.”

To ensure an objective and internationally benchmarked process, Futures Sport & Entertainment, a consultancy with global sports industry experience, has been appointed to conduct the independent valuation. The initiative signals WPCA’s commitment to building sustainable commercial partnerships that will support the growth of cricket in the Western Cape while enhancing the match-day experience for fans and partners alike.

Marc Jury, CEO of Megapro added:

“With world-class international cricket returning to Cape Town, the 2026/27 season offers brands a powerful platform to align with one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting properties. Through this valuation process, we are working to unlock the full commercial potential of WPCA’s assets and structure partnerships that deliver long-term value for both WPCA and its commercial partners.”

Megapro, South Africa’s leading commercial sports and marketing agency, is pleased to announce the appointment of Brad Guymer as General Manager for Rugby.

In his new role, Guymer will oversee Megapro’s extensive rights portfolio across local and overseas rugby, including the national landscape, the country’s premier franchises, the United Rugby Championship (URC) and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR). A highly respected figure in the sporting industry, Guymer joins Megapro following a distinguished nine-year tenure at First National Bank (FNB), where he led sponsorship for major rugby and other sporting properties.

His appointment signals a strategic move by Megapro, which turns 40 this year, to further enhance its prominent role in the rugby ecosystem. Guymer’s deep-rooted relationships with major teams and sponsors, combined with his can-do approach, position him as a key driver for the agency’s future growth.

Commenting on his appointment, Guymer said, “My focus is on the rugby properties from the top end all the way through. Megapro already holds a prominent role in that landscape, and my task is to enhance it. Having worked on the brand side for over nine years, I understand that there is a relatively small basket of sponsors out there; my priority is to establish deeper relationships and truly understand the challenges they face.

“I am ready for this change and I’m inspired by the vision for the Megapro business. It is the right time to invest in sport. South African rugby, in particular, is exceptionally well-positioned, and I am committed to forging the partnerships and managing the narratives that will unlock that value.”

Marc Jury, CEO of Megapro, added, “We are thrilled to welcome Brad to the Megapro leadership team. His reputation for getting things done and his intricate understanding of what sponsors require is second to none. Having sat on the other side of the table for so long, Brad brings a unique perspective that will be invaluable to our rights holders and our partners. His aspirations align perfectly with where we are taking Megapro, and I have no doubt he will be instrumental in evolving how we package and sell the incredible story of South African rugby.”

Guymer’s appointment is effective April 1.

The Iconic Dusi Canoe Marathon Returns to TV for Its 75th Anniversary — Powered by a New Partnership Between Dusi, Megapro, and MegaLive

The Dusi Canoe Marathon, South Africa’s most iconic river race, is set to make a triumphant return to television screens as it celebrates its 75th edition in 2026, taking place from 19 – 21 February 2026.

This milestone year marks the beginning of a dynamic new partnership between the Dusi Canoe Marathon, Megapro, and MegaLive, combining expertise in event commercialization and live broadcasting to elevate the race’s reach and fan experience.

The 75th edition of the Dusi could see Andy Birkett become the first paddler in the history of the race to win 16 titles. A record that would eclipse the incredible feat of 15 wins achieved by the late Graeme Pope-Ellis.

Under this new collaboration, Megapro will drive the commercial framework — securing brand partnerships and maximizing exposure — while MegaLive will lead the broadcast production, ensuring that the action and emotion of this legendary race is captured and shared with audiences across the country.

For the first time in several years, the Dusi will once again be broadcast on television, bringing the race’s thrilling mix of endurance, teamwork, and adventure back to the homes of South Africans. The final day of the 75th Dusi Canoe Marathon will be covered live, offering viewers a front-row seat to the culmination of this world-renowned event.

“The Dusi has always been more than just a race — it’s a South African institution,” said Chairperson of the Dusi Organising Committee Doug Gow. “As we celebrate 75 years, we’re thrilled to once again share the spirit of the Dusi with the nation. This partnership with Megapro and MegaLive ensures that our story — and the stories of every paddler — reach a wider audience than ever before.

“The Dusi continues to be a race, and canoeing a sport, at the forefront of organic transformation and for people to see this success is another exciting element of this partnership.

“Elite paddlers are some of the most inspiring athletes around and we are excited to showcase their talents on a national stage.”

Megapro, a leader in sports commercial rights and event management, brings a proven track record of creating value for brands and sporting properties across the continent. Their collaboration with MegaLive will ensure world-class coverage and storytelling throughout the event.

“At Megapro we believe in the power of South African sport. To be able to play a part in uplifting an iconic South African event in the Dusi Canoe Marathon is a real privilege,” said Marc Jury, Group CEO of Megapro.

“At MegaLive, we are genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to broadcast the Dusi Canoe Marathon once again in 2026. Bringing this iconic South African event back to TV screens is a challenge we eagerly embrace. We look forward to showcasing the remarkable passion, determination, and spirit of the athletes and communities that make this race so special,” said Sean Everett, CEO of MegaLive.

The 75th Dusi Canoe Marathon promises to be a celebration of heritage, perseverance, and innovation — a showcase of how tradition and technology can come together to reimagine one of Africa’s most iconic sporting events.
